THE BASICS

It’s time to start exploring life outside of TV news.

You may not be at the point where you dread Mondays or feel trapped by a toxic newsroom…

but you are thinking about breaking out of breaking news.

Here is a "basic” blueprint for leaving TV news:

Uncover your passions and talents outside of TV news. You don’t have to jump into PR or Marketing unless that really lights you up!! So find what you are passionate about, and what companies excite you, and start doing some research!

Example:

You love marine wildlife. Penguins are your jam. Why not look into a media relations position at your local aquarium? You would line up your passions and your talents with a job like that!

You love to write. But these crazy deadlines? While your stories make air every night, you’d rather NOT have crazy tight deadlines anymore. Moving into a new industry, find something where you would use the skills you enjoy most.

Write down what skills you want to keep using - and which ones you don’t.

Example:

Work on a non-news resume. You will need more than one resume, FYI. You can’t submit the same resume to every open position you apply to. You need to make sure each resume you submit showcases the skills they are looking for in particular.

Read your resume from the perspective of someone who has never been in TV news. Does your resume explain the value you bring to the table?  The phrases “produce the 6 and 11” and “go live each day” mean nothing to the outside world. So many sure you translate your transferable skills. Showcase your value, not just your skill.

Pro Tip:

Find support! You probably had a mentor getting IN to TV news. Having a mentor to guide you on the way OUT of news is just as important.

Don’t just jump at any ol’ job just to get out. If you don’t take the time to uncover who you are outside of our industry and what really lights you up, you may end up regretting leaving.
