THE DIY APPROACH

It takes 4-6 months on average to find a career outside of news, so if you want to “Do-It-Yourself” here are some things you need to know, starting now:

You will want to tailor your resume to each job you apply to. That means finding the key words and phrases that companies are looking for, and then showing how you fit that job.  Make sure that your resume shows how you’ve added value to the station where you worked. (metrics are huge!). Don’t just list your roles at the station. Remember: showcase value over duties.

Unlike getting a job in news, where all you need is a reel and a simple resume, that’s not how it works in other industries.

Tip:

Network like crazy! You have a local network you’ve created in your town, so connect with them! And reach back to those who you were close to in your other markets. Why? Your network is your net-worth. Connect with them on LinkedIn™ - and then reach out in the DMs to set up a coffee chat. Asking for a quick phone call or a Zoom chat is very common practice on LinkedIn™.

You can follow companies on LinkedIn™, and even click on the “I’m interested” button to show them you are intrigued.

Tip:

Level up your LinkedIn™. This is the #1 business platform in the world. As of 2025, there are 1.1 billion people on LinkedIn™ and it’s the first place hiring managers go when they get your resume.

Make sure your LinkedIn isn’t just showcasing your latest A-Block or your favorite live shot. Make sure you put up a new banner, create a headline, and upgrade your “About Section.”
